Musings

Ive always been facinated by the norse mythology folowed by vikings ,as well as bushido code

The whole essence of being a warrior was acceptance of inevitability of death, something we all seem to escape from all our lives till it finally catches up

If the vikings believd the only way to enter "valhalla" was by dying young and bravely in battle, the samurai followed the famed bushido code(bushi meaning warrior hence quite literally warriors code)Its basic principles were :-
seven essential principles:

1. Gi: the right decision, taken with equanimity, the right attitude, the truth. When we must die, we must die. Rectitude.

2. Yu: bravery tinged with heroism.

3. Jin: universal love, benevolence toward mankind; compassion.

4. Rei: right action--a most essential quality, courtesy.

5. Makoto: utter sincerity; truthfulness.

รณ. Melyo: honor and glory.

7. Chugo: devotion, loyalty.

the whole thing about being totally stoic to death as seen in gi is seen in india, where everything is believed to be decided by fate, sadly when it comes to death most seem to fight it.to accept it and live each day as last with riht attitude, what else can a man desire?

as for yu,its easy being brave when theres no fear

ive belived true courage is when a man is afraid,n still does what is right, fear is nothing more than an oppurtunity to prove real courage. And when it occurs for righteousness,we have true heroism

as for Jin,enshrined so well in our constituions preamble, with its principles of equality secularism fraternity etc,one can so easily n readily adopt them

Rei,right action, truly important, any one can act,but a wrong act can do so much harm which may never be undone, when every act cummulates, the results can vary from perfection to disaster,so morality must ever be comprimised or abandoned in deeds

Makato,if u deceive others u decieve ur self.self deception is no better than living in a deluded world, where anything is used to justify while a voice deep within says otherwise, dont avoid that voice, that voice is pure,it comes from ur heart, let it guide u

Melyo, honor n glory, they only true wealth.one can only boast about these, takes a lifetime to get these, but can be lost in an instant n thus must be guarded, forever,as fiercely as one wld guard their loved ones, perhaps even more so

Chugo, devotion and loyalty, but to whom? Not to oneself, for that wld make one no beter than a creature who exists for the sake of existence.devotion, loyalty are best suited for something far greater,it may be country society ....but ultimate devotion must be to Goodness rather than god,to people rather than a political boundary to Justice rather than law,to Righteousness, perhaps the best guide to this is that voice within, given to Man by the One upstairs.

In addition certain principles from budhism were borrowed by shintoism which were expected to be followed at all times
  • Pacification of the emotions;
  • Tranquil compliance with the inevitable;
  • Self-control in the face of any event;
  • A more intimate exploration of death than of life;
  • Pure poverty.

  • with emotions pacified, everything becomes so clear

a peaceful acceptance of inevitable, whehther death or failure, can give all the strength one needs to face any adversity

self control enables control over circumstances

a thorough insight in death makes one accept it,and when it comes to calmly embrace it,and once we start treating each day as our last, lets us truly "live" :)

pure poverty, something that will always save us from being corrupted

whatever awaits us after death,im not sure of

    but i know this

    it doesnt matter how u die,when u die,how u lived,what u "lived as",but why u died,and more importantly what u "lived for"

    everything else becomes completely irrelevant,power,money,prestige,comforts,family,loved ones............Total detachment,no fear,no anger,nothing but complete peace,calm n tranquility,quailites a warrior can use anywhere.

    Target Shooting

Im making this post for others who might be interested in this great sport,i strongly believe anyone can perfect themselves in this sport, not only is it cheap, highly relaxing and helps in improving focus and concnetration, but its a very individual sport allowing for any one to partake in it even if no other friend is present

First some safety tips before u handle a weapon(which is what anything that can shoot a projectile at 600+ feet per seconds easily is)

do not aim at anything unless ur about to shoot it

keep ur finger of the trigger at all times till ur ready to shoot

make sure there is some wall etc behind the target to ensure u dont hit someone else on the pellets trajectory

dont shoot at animals birds etc unless ur hunting/controlling pests such as rodents(in farms where poison is dangerous) etc

always,i repeat, always load the pellet before u cock the mechanism n not after, this is because the spring piston may discharge accidently and the rifle WILL CLOSE RESULTING IN U LOSING FINGERS,its happened a lot

stay at least 33 feet away from target while shooting, pellet tends to richochet back and hard

keep a brick behind the target all the same even if theres a wall for that extra protection

    Now on to the rifle
u can get an air pistol but indian ones not good,go for foreign .177 calibre brands

but rifles r more fun ;)

regarding whcih rifle to go for

Pneumatic r recomended for competitons, but ur gona have to start with a spring piston break barrel type (which are more fun anway :D)

    regarding calibre u have a choce of .22 n .177
.22 better suited for hunting purposes,so stick with .177 as it has a flatter trajectory than .22 along with a better velocity, this will ensure better acuracy in performance compared to .22

lots of rifles available in market, best wld be of course .177 of foregin makes ut they r expensive n hard to get eg diana company, walther etc

so start with Indian Hume Pipe company ones
here are some of their rifles

    http://www.indianhumepipe.com/pistol.html#pneumatic
    http://www.indianhumepipe.com/rifle1.html

their pneumatic ones have given problems so avoid them, stick with the NATIONAL - 25 AIR RIFLE or my personal rifle model National 35 posted below, its cheap too n lasts for decades if u treat it right

    NATIONAL - 35 AIR RIFLE
    Calibre 4.5 mm ( 0.177")
    Overall Length 1155 mm
    Barrel Length 450 mm
    Shooting Range 35 Meters
    Cocking Break Barrel

I use an open sighted one,uc an get a peep sight mounted if u like,it improves accuracy but since i shoot for challenge i avoid it

for pellets u have 3 choices

pointed heads which i dont recommend,as they zig zag n divert trajectory path easily, altho logic wld didctate pointed shape to improve it the skirt behind it spoils it compared to normal pointed bullets

round heads, are ok and have a good "punch"

flatheads great for paper targets coins candle flames etc, best part is not only are they most accurate they also get flattened on impact so less harmfull on ricochet,1 tin of 500 pellets can cost from 120-150 rs only

    Tips

    relax,dont be tense,take ur time
aim so that pipper in barel lines well with the sight
sight the target, put ur index fingers "pad" to pull the trigger, not the joint area, most use joints it spoils acuracy as while pulling hands tend to move

get used to conditioning both arms to stay steady,i kept mugs of water n 10 pound weights steady for long periods to condition my arms, hence i dont shake much, ull find this problem initialy but it will disapear with practice

get used to "sway",even with steady hands rifle moves when u breathe naturally, its called sway,so learn when sway will bring it back on sight of target in order to indicate perfect time to shoot

squeeze trigger gently, dont pull,it affects a lot in acuracy

when ur lungs are 3/4th empty best to squeeze

even after u squeeze the trigger pellet still in barrel for a few micro seconds,so learn to "follow through",wait till it impacts before moving again

wear glasses if u want extra protection(tho i dont)

learn to make it chalenging by using both shoulders,i shoot with both right n left tho im right handed, bulls eyes r more fun with opposite hand :D

learn to account for recoil, its usualy up n two-five degrees left if u using left hand or right if using right hand

Download printable targets form internet, start with "grid targets" as they will show u where ur rifles sighted to "zero it in" along with getting used to sway n recoil

here are a few good ones
    http://www.mytargets.com/

Maintainance:Dont over oil ur rifle,it will "diesel" that oil will burn on friction n damage ur piston seal, instead oil every 500 shots with few drops to moisten seal, moving areas,as well as spring n then clean barrel with surgical grade spirit found in any pharmacist shop,it cleans it of oil grime perfectly

    Now someting about recoil
spring pistons have 2 recoils, one is the "true recoil" of pellet leaving barrel n causing recoil
other is that caused my movement of piston when it releases,to cut it down i tape my rifle on the barrel area n then slit the tape to aloow for free movement in cocking the rifle,it helps cut down on vibrations

    Good luck,practice a lot,it will help a lot :)

    Books for gs

here are a few books which can help u for gs

dd basu constituion for india for polity+cvil services times special on polity

    grover+spectrum+cst specials+11th n 12th ncert for history

    11th n 12th ncert geography

    8-10 science ncert for pre

india yearbook a must for pre n mains

the hindu, delhi edition, read n make notes or at least save cuttings, notes bete as while reading n writing easier to revise from mags for same topics

In magazines competition sucess review is good for gs pre, specially the gk today section at back, with emphasis on whose who, where which conference took place, its themes, prizes, etc along with india n world news

for mains civil services times and chronicles helpful, make ur own analysed opinion instead of writing facts however

for stats ncert 11th or spectrum stats sufficient

reason why i opted order of services

k ive been asked this time n again

let me pen it down here for once n all

in 2006 june 14,my elder brother passed away due to brain haemmorraige, had he been rushed to a hopsital in time(in spite of him insisting he was fine after seizures which were common with him as he was hypertensive) he might have been alive today

I never forgave myself, still dont, for not having done my best to save him

ias was my 1st mainly due to power prestige etc, which it offered, something so shallow it made me ashamed,n i kept it even lower than ifs just in case i were incapicated physically by an accident etc for ips danips etc i wdnt get it on a technicality if i got in merit
hence i went from ias as 1st choice n ips as 2nd to ips as 1st

Ips offered me a chance to do my best,n risk my life if i had to in order to save innoncent civilians whether from criminals, terrorists, drug dealers, insurgents ,communalists, rioters etc.Anytime i failed i knew id more than gladly lose mine to bullets, sharpnels or anything else, that to me was more agreaable than not doing anything or not doing enough and thus end up seeing more blood being shed n families being destroyed, pain which i am well aware of myself

    then i put ifs n ias as 2nd n 3rd respectively

(ifs n ias being mere formalities to respect them)

irts as 1st grp A,(the sole reaon being irts not only contributes directly to passenger safety in thousands,it also fuels our economy, safeguards economy by ensuring a continuous supply, earns revenue for country to use in other develoopment schemes, helps people reach their work places in other areas cities etc thus ensuring livelihood of god knows how many, affects development directly by ensuring connectivity n so forth

customs was a failsafe in case others had already opted irts(to one day hopefuly check narcotics n arms again directly related to saving lives)

danips n pondiicherry police were next, only lower than irts, partly them being group b but mainly as other than delhi not many risks/threats,since ips gave me chance to go on 15 year deuptation at least to insurgency areas, something i knew i cld use my skills in or at least die trying if i failed whereas irts still had a chance to contribute larger to safety of others

other services tho great,i placed lower as my main motive was to save n protect, something i couldnt do for my own brother, and a burden on my soul im gonna have to carry with me to my grave

I wanted to join the army in 07 but by then had crossed age limits, hence these 3 were my only roads to salvation

god has given me a chance again to redeem myself,im always going to be grateful for it,i pray i remain strong as ever and use this oppurtunity to find peace again

    books thread

posting this for other candidates with psy n pub ad

hope u can use the list i used for ur future preps :)
for paper 2 janak pandey psy in india revisited 3 volumes sufficient with normal books of paper 1
i dont recomend pathak's notesexclusively, found lots of errors in studies names as most taken from pandey with wrong dates etc
(at best use them for reference)
    for personality-hall n lindsay+ziegler at best
    for abnormal-carson butcher n mineka
    for social-baron
for methodology-aksingh psy testing+kothari research methodology+garret in stats
for general psy-intro by morgan n by baron
    organisational behavior by P robbins
also, stuff for theories etc can be googled
here is some material id downloaded from net, hope it helps future candidates

    its direct link
    http://www.esnips.com/nsdoc/9c1fe172-0e60-4d29-8009-1f2ee1c60471/?action=forceDL

    ew tips
make sure u do classical studies which established the theory,as well as indian studies, specially ones which replicated the classical studies in indian context(all in pandey)

stick to an applied aproch when studying psy

feel free to use daily examples
eg-classical conditioning=anxiety in dentists office as pain+dentists chair associated etc or pain+dentists drill sound

    or observational

celebrity endorbsements, can also explain how classical works,as celebrtiy's prestige+product=prestige in product

    or atractive model+car=atraction towards car

    and so forth
